CBT (Compulsory Basic Training)
CBT
(compulsory Basic Training) was first introduced
1st December 1990 in an effort to reduce the number of bike
accidents. This is the first step to getting on the road.
The CBT certificate (DL196) validates your
provisional entitlement on your licence and is valid for 2
years.
At 16 years old your category P is active, which means you
can ride a 50 cc moped restricted to 30 mph
with L plates, (you can apply for your licence 3 months before
your 16th birthday).
At 17 years old your category A becomes live
and you can ride up to 125 cc motorcycle
with L plates. If you are intending to continue your training
up to taking a practical test we recommend
you take your CBT on a 125 cc manual
bike.
The course is set down by law and broken
down in to 5 key elements, A to E. Each element must be completed
before moving onto the next.
Element
A
Licence check, you need to bring both parts of your UK licence,
photo card and paper counterpart. Next we give you an eyesight
check; you must be able to read a standard number plate at
20.5 metres or 67ft. If you wear glasses for the eye sight
test you are required to wear them when riding. Next is a
chat on clothing and why we need to wear them when we are
riding.
Element
B
We take a look at the bike you will be riding and go through
all the things we need to know to ride it safely. This also
includes taking the bike on and off the stand.
Element
C
Off road riding: this where you will learn to ride the bike
in a safe environment. It includes: pulling away and stopping,
gear changing, slow control, controlled stop and correct sequencing
for left and right turns. At the end of this section you and
your instructor will decide if you are ready for the road.
Element
D
Pre road ride chat: This includes all the things we need to
be aware of when riding out on the road so as to stay safe.
If a car and a bike get into an argument the car wins every
time, so it’s not just about what we do but our awareness
of what is happening around us.
Element
E
Two hour road ride under supervision. This is conducted at
a ratio of 2 to 1. Here we start you off in quiet roads practicing
your sequences for left and right turns. Then we take you
to busier roads and build up your confidence in dealing with
traffic. You will be expected to complete the U-turn and a
controlled stop during the road ride.
At
the end of your ride the instructor will decide if with your
limited abilities you stayed safe and were not a danger to
yourself or other road users. If the instructor is satisfied
you will receive your CBT certificate. This
will then allow you to go away and practice you new skills
to make yourself a better rider.
You will not become a complete bike rider by the end of your
CBT, but you will have a good understanding
of what you need to do to stay completely safe.
Throughout
the day if you have any questions, please ask your instructor
because you need to be clear and focused on what you are doing.
If
you have any questions regarding the CBT
please contact our office for advice.
