Frequently Asked Questions (Ask Ronn)

Q: What size bike should I be considering, after I pass my A2/Restricted test?

A: Having passed your restricted test you are allowed to ride up to 33bhp. To have a bike restricted costs about £200.00. What you must obtain is the certificate of restriction. The thing to bear in mind is the larger the original bhp the greater the power loss. I wouldn’t advise restricting a CBR600 or a R6!!

Q: What size bike should I be considering, after I pass my DAS test?

A: Legally you can buy any bike you can afford the insurance for...However the bike you did your test on was 54 bhp (brake horse power). So a sensible climb would be to about the 80 bhp mark. The larger the bhp the more machine sympathy is required. Stay safe...keep it real!!

Q: After passing my test when should I consider carrying a pillion passenger?

A: After getting your bike, I would advise riding it for a couple of months to be fully used to and comfortable with it, before carrying someone on the back. You would not believe how carrying a pillion changes the riding characteristics of the bike. The biggest difference is the centre of gravity moves back and up. Which make the bike less stable!!

Q: Would you recommend doing some advanced training after I pass my test?

A: Yes I would. During your test training there would have been some aspects of your riding you would like to improve on. Also undertaking advanced training will give you maturity in your riding in a greatly reduced time scale. Taking an advanced test will get you cheaper insurance....because you are more aware, you will be safer and more confident and enjoy your riding more...
